During that time, he was the subject of a controversy when he lied about having served in Vietnam. There, he served as the dean of faculty for ten years, and received the Ford Foundation Chair in American History, among other accolades. In 1972, Ellis joined the faculty of Mount Holyoke College as a history professor. Army, he taught at West Point for three years, beginning in 1969. He then received a Master of Arts, a Master of Philosophy, and a Ph.D from Yale University. from the College of William and Mary in 1965.
